President Biden is overseeing the most aggressive purge of traditional values in American history. The 1960s might have been the era of sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll, the 1980s the decade of greed, the 1990s the end of the era of big government… but we are on the cusp of a new era in American culture. The year 2021, and the inauguration of President Joe Biden, mark a new era dominated by abortion, gender selection, and racial equity; it is the era of counterrevolution. The culture war is being fought on the battlefield of identity politics, political correctness, and wokeness. The left’s war is about abortion on demand, without restriction, at any time, and for any reason, gender by choice, with unrestricted access to sex-specific facilities and activities, and reverse racism, with a war on “whiteness.” The right continues to fight for the sanctity of human life, traditional gender labels, and against the woke racism of today’s radical left. It’s a seemingly endless war with the divisions between the two sides growing, soon to be irreconcilable.
Former Republican presidential candidate, Pat Buchanan, said at the 1992 Republican National Convention, “There is a religious war going on in our country for the soul of America. It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we will one day be as was the Cold War itself.” While his sentiments regarding divisions amongst Americans over values are as true today as they were then, we would be foolish to attribute these differences to religion. There are Christians, Jews, Muslims, and atheists on both sides, as one’s values, while heavily influenced by faith, are not solely determined by religious teachings. Evangelical Christians may have fired the first salvo in response to the left’s subversion of traditional American values, but our cultural differences go well beyond the religious beliefs of the combatants. Right and wrong are much more than what is learned in Bible class.
There is no normal when it comes to values – each individual, through internal feelings and deliberations, family influence, religious background, and personal experiences, develops his or her own values. There are, however, strong feelings attached to personal values. Hence, the culture war. Each side is fighting to ensure that the country their children and grandchildren grow up in reflects the values that they hold dear. The left values choice in opposition to life. They choose choice over science. They value equity over equality. In contrast, the right values life at the potential expense of choice, believe there are two genders and not an unlimited selection, and promote equality rather than equity. The lines in the sand have been drawn, and the war is in full swing.
Upon assuming office, President Biden rescinded many of President Trump’s pro-life orders, including restoring Title X funding to Planned Parenthood, lifting the funding restrictions on those organizations that refer women for abortion. Planned Parenthood can now receive federal tax dollars while advising women to seek abortions, which they just happen to provide, making it easy and accessible to have an abortion. He eliminated the Mexico City policy, first enacted during the Reagan administration and expanded by Trump, now allowing American taxpayer money to go to international organizations that perform abortions. Biden and the Democrats also support abolishing the Hyde amendment, offering taxpayer-funded abortions for low-income women, meaning that taxpayers with strong personal or religious objections would be funding abortions without choice. The president also wants to enact legislation that makes abortion a right.
The most terrifying aspect of the left’s affection for abortion is the fact that they support a woman’s right to have an abortion and take a human life for any reason and at any time during the pregnancy. The debate over the legality of abortion has been a priority of both sides for decades, but the promotion of abortion by the current Democrat party is offensive to those who value life. It is legal as of this writing, and must therefore be available to women, but it should never be a first option, should not be used as contraception for irresponsible behavior, should be illegal once there are demonstrable signs of life, should not be funded by taxpayer dollars, and certainly should never be subsidized overseas by American funding. It is one thing to defend a woman’s right to choose, but another thing to encourage and promote abortion, and despicable to foster an environment in which abortion is viewed as a constitutional right along the lines of free speech and the right to bear arms.
There are those who argue that a woman has a right to choose what to do with her body, but what about the rights of the unborn child? With the exception of rape or incest (any kind of forced conception), the woman made the choice to use her body in a way that she knew could result in pregnancy. It was her choice that resulted in the creation of a human life inside her. Should murder be a way out of the consequences of the choices women make? I guess there are two questions here – (1) Should a woman have the right to take another’s life if it is growing inside her body? (2) When does life begin? After all, is it not murder to take another’s life? While there seems to be consensus in the pro-choice movement that a woman should have a right to abort her child for any reason, there are those in the pro-life camp who are not as absolute in the negative. There are many opponents of abortion who believe in exceptions for women who conceived the child as a result of rape or incest, and in cases where complications could negatively impact the health of the mother. Regardless, there are always questions as to whether or not abortion is murder, when life begins, and whose rights must be protected and prioritized.
The first Catholic elected president since John F. Kennedy in 1960 is proving to be the least Catholic of Americans. President Biden has all but declared war on Catholic dogma, turning his back on his faith as a politically expedient opportunity to placate his extremist supporters. Along with lifting any and all restrictions on access to abortion and funding of abortions, actually advancing the view of abortion as a constitutional right, and supporting legislation to force doctors to perform abortions even if they object, he also supports forcing religious organizations with objections of faith, such as the Little Sisters of the Poor, to provide contraception as part of health insurance programs offered to employees. This is a blatant violation of the first amendment, infringing on the rights of the Sisters of the Poor to practice their faith. As a non-government organization, they are entitled to operate according to their desired policies, and any individual choosing to be a part of the organization must abide by the values espoused by the organization. The left wants government control of all aspects of our life, demonstrated by such a case. Conservatives, constitutionalists, and patriotic Americans must continue to fight to ensure that the rights of all Americans and American groups are protected, whether or not we agree with their value systems.
Most of us grew up in a society that acknowledged the existence of two genders. Today we are told there are a multitude of genders, with many on the left claiming there is an infinite amount. Previous generations grew up assigned to the gender of their biological anatomy… boys and girls were divided based on their sex – separate restrooms, locker rooms, sports, etc. According to the World Health Organization, “Gender refers to the socially constructed characteristics of women and men, such as norms, roles, and relationships of and between groups of women and men. It varies from society to society and can be changed.” We are to believe that although it is related to sex, it is distinct. In other words, an individual’s gender might not match the sex to which he or she was born, or the individual might subscribe to a totally unique perception of his or her personal gender. The problem is not that individuals might relate to a gender different than their biological sex. We are all unique, and we are all entitled to the same unalienable rights, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation. The trouble comes when the left’s “new science” is forced upon society.
Women fought for years to obtain equal rights, with the struggle continuing in many arenas. Title IX finally gave women an equal standing in education and sports, and female sports in the United States increased tremendously, both in opportunities provided to women, and popularity amongst the public. The Democrats insist that an individual should have the right to choose a gender and apply that chosen gender to use of facilities and participation in activities. Therefore, biological males should be allowed to compete against biological females, and use the same restroom and locker room facilities. Conservatives disagree. In Biden’s executive order on transgender discrimination, it says, "Every person should be treated with respect and dignity and should be able to live without fear, no matter who they are or whom they love." That statement should be universally accepted by all members of the human race, without question and regardless of one’s personal beliefs, opinions, or faith. Equal treatment for all, period. No one should be subjected to hate, ridicule, ostracizing, or discrimination of any kind and for any reason.
However, the order erroneously goes on to insinuate discrimination, stating, "Children should be able to learn without worrying about whether they will be denied access to the restroom, the locker room, or school sports." Biological males who identify as females are not being denied access to a restroom, locker room, or sports… those of us on the right simply believe that it should be a female restroom, a female locker room, and female sports for those born to the female sex. There are many fairness and safety issues involved in giving a free pass for individuals to “identify” with a specific gender and use facilities and participate in sports without restriction. The radicals on the left are always more concerned with the minority at the expense of the majority… criminal rights over the rights of law-abiding citizens, illegal aliens over American citizens, and transgender over cisgender. We should not deny rights to anyone, including transgender people, but what about the rights of non-transgender persons? Should the feeling of belonging and acceptance of transgender individuals supersede the safety and fairness concerns of cisgender females? As the left notes, sex and gender are different; restrooms and locker rooms are separated according to sex, not gender, and therefore should remain restricted only to those members of the same sex.
Race relations have always been a controversial topic in the United States, and while gender and sexuality have risen to prominence in the new woke culture, race remains at the core of all issues related to equality. We have all heard the inherent and systemic racism narratives, the perils of white privilege and the secret of white fragility, and the distorted history of the American experiment, throughout the past decade, with both peaceful and violent movements claiming the banner of social justice and racial equality. With the exception of a very small minority of racist members on both sides, both the left and the right want all Americans to share in equal opportunity and equal treatment under the law. We are NOT a racist nation. This, however, is where the commonality diverges. The radical left, including Black Lives Matter, the liberal socialists, and woke revolutionaries, not only want equality, but they actually demand equity. It is not enough to ensure that people of color have the same opportunities and access to resources as white people; the radical left demands equitable outcomes. They demand that regardless of where we all start, and regardless of what we all do along the way, we all must end up at the same place. Work hard or not at all – end up with the same rewards. Follow the law or break the law – end up at the same place. There is nothing American about equity… it is the opposite of the American dream. The left utilizes race as a weapon, drawing upon the race card and promoting identity politics while misleading the public and advancing a radical agenda to change the American value system. They have created the perception of a system in which blacks will always be the victims of white oppression, all whites are oppressors who are inherently racist due to their skin color, and the nation has always and will always be racist.
Joe Biden said during the presidential campaign of 2020 that the election was “a battle for the soul of America.” That battle has been going on for decades, and the left has been winning, as the “silent majority” has failed to mobilize. The radical left has been louder, they have been prouder, and they have been heard. The right must wake up and stand up, or traditional values will be lost. To the radicals on the left, those of us who do not see skin color as a tool of division, those who believe in equality and not equity, and those who are “privileged” as a result of their skin color, are either racist, complicit in racism, or oblivious to racism. Those who believe in the sanctity of human life are maligned as denying female reproductive rights and portrayed as anti-female for promoting the right to life over the right to choose. Those who believe that there are two genders, children should not be encouraged to select an alternative gender, and there are still certain aspects of life where biological males and females should remain equal but separate, are accused of being transphobic and discriminatory. These are only a few of the cultural battles in America today, but they are among the most notable. Will there ever be any negotiation, compromise, or accommodation made by either side when it comes to abortion, race, and gender? Can one compromise on values? The rhetoric is vicious, the vitriol is increasing, and the divisions are widening. The current president is only fanning the flames, kowtowing to the woke warriors and promoting a counterculture agenda. Each side is digging in, with a seemingly endless culture war threatening to engulf future generations of Americans.
