The Oppressive Road to Tyranny

“Liberty once lost, is lost forever.”

- John Adams

In announcing his executive orders on guns, President Joe Biden decreed, “No amendment to the Constitution is absolute…” Mr. President, the purpose of the Bill of Rights is to guarantee that no tyrant can ever take away the rights of the people, and for that reason, the amendments are absolute. They offer absolute protection that, unless our actions infringe upon the rights of another, those rights shall forever be ours. Biden claims the authority to overrule the Constitution to “protect the American people” and “keep the American people safe.” I say to the people of the United States, beware a leader who claims noble motives in suppressing your rights. French philosopher Albert Camus suggested, “The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants.” Adolf Hitler promised to take care of the struggling citizenry and bring civil order back to Germany. Lenin vowed to improve the conditions of the workers and end food shortages in Russia with a promise of “Peace, Land, and Bread.” Fidel Castro pledged to bring prosperity, dignity, and equality to the Cuban people. All lied. All were tyrants who brought further suffering to their people and created brutal authoritarian societies with virtually no freedom.

We have begun the descent into tyranny… censorship of conservative voices promoted as protection from hate speech and misinformation, restrictions on certain groups’ freedom of assembly explained as efforts to protect democracy, houses of worship forcibly closed described as actions to keep people safe from the spread of a virus, the disregard of due process in the name of women’s rights, and now, limits on Americans’ right to bear arms in the name of public safety.

The Father of the Constitution, James Madison, claimed, “There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.” With this declaration, he warned future generations to beware those seemingly innocuous power grabs, those reductions in individual liberty in the name of our own good. We are seeing this today – the left promotes a false narrative that Trump supporters and Republicans want to subvert American democracy, allowing them to implement military occupation of our nation’s capital and restrict the right of free movement and free assembly of the American people. They perpetuate the existence of a “public health crisis” while exploiting tragic incidents to restrict gun ownership. They claim misinformation and hate speech to censor those views and opinions that do not conform to their liberal socialist orthodoxy. Each seemingly harmless little encroachment on our freedoms, liberties, and rights moves the United States further to a tyranny of the far left. Social media giants, broadcast networks, and printed press are all complicit, forsaking their responsibility as guardians of truth and disseminators of fact to present a one-sided perspective and promote the narratives of the leftist counterrevolution

Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, once claimed that he had “sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” The American people must realize we have begun to travel the unjust road to tyranny under the oppression of a liberal socialist counterrevolution. The goal of the left is not just to control our actions and what we say, but most importantly to control how we think. They indoctrinate our youth through schools disguised as institutions of learning that actually operate as indoctrination centers. They control what we see and hear by editing video and altering audio, influencing how and what we think by presenting only biased reports and manipulating events to fit their anti-American, socialist point of view. Jefferson feared “tyranny over the mind of man.” The easiest way to gain control over how people behave is to gain control over how they think. We are being manipulated by the combined forces of the Democrat party, Marxist activist groups, social media, broadcast networks, and printed press to see the world as they see it, not as it truly is. Democrat Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts." The left is trying to control the narrative by promoting their opinions as facts and refusing to provide the American people with the truth behind their “facts.”

Biden has declared guns to be a “public health crisis.” Every attempt to limit our individual freedoms and exert more government control over our lives has come in the name of equality, safety, and justice. Just as Hitler offered an end of distinct social classes to idealistic young Germans, Biden offers an American society built around equity, where there are equal outcomes for all. It is all about social and economic justice. French philosopher Montesquieu asserted, “There is no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice.” Limiting the rights of law-abiding citizens to bear arms does nothing to take guns out of the hands of the criminals that commit gun violence. It simply takes away the ability of citizens to defend themselves and their property. There will be less justice, not more, if the government takes away our guns. Limiting our rights in the name of justice is injustice disguised as noble and honorable attempts to protect them. The easiest way to seduce the public into relinquishing rights is to convince them they are promoting the greater good, that it is just and right. Is tyranny the greater good? Does restricting rights make anyone’s life better?

According to Walt Whitman, “There is no week nor day nor hour when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their roughness and spirit of defiance.” Tyranny reins as long as people allow it. When people silently allow their freedom, liberty, and rights to be usurped, tyranny is welcomed. Edmund Burke warned, “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.” As Joe Biden claims power beyond that prescribed by the Constitution, and infringes upon our Constitutional rights in the name of safety, we must continue to voice our opposition and demand that our rights be respected. The Democrats have encouraged the protests of Black Lives Matter, even to the point of accepting violent riots and looting that have resulted from those efforts. Let us now turn the tables, taking advantage of our right to protest, while it still exists, and assemble in defense of our rights. Unlike those on the left, we must always ensure that all protest is peaceful as violence is never a way to a better future. If we accept smaller restrictions on gun ownership, as we have with our other rights, it will embolden the Biden administration and its allies to push for more aggressive encroachments.

Frederick Douglass, famous abolitionist who himself was a former slave, expressed his belief that “The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.” We must endure to protect our liberty. We can never surrender those rights granted us by the founding fathers and protected by the blood of patriots for generations. Let us rally to the words of activist Dana Loesch, who said, “We must heed the call of action and, with courageous steps and humble hearts, work against tyranny.” The gradual and silent encroachments James Madison warned against have begun. We have commenced our travel down the oppressive road to tyranny. Whether we continue down that path toward socialist oppression, or revive the American republic as the land of liberty, depends on the resolve and sacrifice of American patriots.
