In the aftermath of the January 6th uprising, any member of the Republican Party who does not support the unconstitutional impeachment and removal of Donald Trump, has been labeled a terrorist or terrorist sympathizer. Anyone who believes that there were election irregularities in the 2020 presidential election is declared a member of a cult worshipping at the altar of Donald Trump. Washington Post editor Eugene Robinson wants to “deprogram” Trump supporters. Echoing his sentiments, former CBS news anchor Katie Couric questioned, “How are we going to really, almost deprogram these people who have signed up for the cult of Trump?” President Biden has repeatedly declared the need for unity, for an end to the vitriol, but he has been eerily silent when Republicans and Trump supporters are bitterly and hatefully attacked by his leftist comrades.
MSNBC’s Jason Johnson, angered that the GOP has not removed Marjorie Taylor Greene from the House of Representatives, branded all Republicans as terrorists. He advised the Democrats to say, “These people are terrorists, and they don’t want to govern, and we don’t negotiate with terrorists.” Very unifying. Much like Hillary Clinton referred to Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables,” and Barack Obama said, "They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them…” referring to working-class Americans, the left weaponizes the words or actions of a small minority against their political opposition. They pigeonhole. Again, very unifying.
Greater New York Black Lives Matter President Hawk Newsome encourages and promotes violence as a way to get what his group wants, threatening, “If this country doesn’t give us what we want, then we will burn down this system and replace it.” Have you heard any Democrats condemning his speech? Chicago Black Lives Matter organizer Ariel Atkins encourages looting as “reparations.” How many Democrats have spoken out against such statements? Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, two anti-Israel members of “the Squad,” support the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. Are all members of the Democratic Caucus in Congress anti-Israel and supportive of this movement because of the support of two of its members? Another member of the Squad, Ayanna Pressley declared, “…there should be unrest in the streets,” while now-vice president Kamala Harris helped bail out those who participated in riots and looting during the supposedly “peaceful protests.” Does that mean that the Democrats are terrorists responsible for the burning of the streets of Portland, the occupation of the autonomous zone in Seattle, and the violence and destruction that has plagued other American cities? Congresswoman Maxine Waters is constantly bragging about how she threatens Trump supporters, yet she is not condemned or removed from committee assignments. Does she represent the entire Democrat party in her endorsement of un-American behavior?
Looking at Merriam-Webster, one would find unity to mean “oneness,” “a condition of harmony,” and “a totality of related parts.” We cannot become one if we allow ourselves to continue to be divided by the words and actions of a few extremists and the propaganda of anti-American subversives. We cannot find harmony if we continue to allow individuals to label others and disparage and harass those with whom they disagree. We cannot ever achieve the totality of our American parts – black, white, and Hispanic; male and female; rich and poor; Christian, Jew, and Muslim; gay, straight, and transgender – until we accept each other for who we are, and identify individuals based on their own words and actions, and not by those with whom they might share an ideology or political party. If President Biden truly wants unity, if he sincerely wants to bring Americans together, then he can start by condemning the disparagement, ridicule, scorn, and harassment of those who exercise their freedoms of speech, assembly, and worship to stand for issues contrary to liberal orthodoxy, and he can start by ending the left’s strategy of branding those with whom they disagree as terrorists and enemies of democracy. If the president actually seeks American unity, he must start by lifting us out of the pigeonhole.
